How much do I need?

Firewood is bought and sold by cubic volume. The only sanctioned term by "Weights and Measurements Canada" is a full (bush) cord (or fractions thereof). A full cord represents 128 cubic ft of cut and split firewood stacked, or 180 cubic ft of cut and split firewood loose. It is generally refered to as 8' x 4' x 4', but not many people stack their wood in a big cube.

The following terms have been used to measure wood in the past but are not recognized by "Weights and Measurements Canada" and therefore are not legal trade terms: face cord, bush cord, country cord, city cord, kitchen cord, fence cord, fencing cord, running cord, metric cord, cubic cord, stove cord, fireplace cord, etc.

Full cords (128 cubic ft stacked or 180 cubic ft loose)

Enough wood to last the average household the season if you have approximately 4-5 fires per week.

1/2 cords (64 cubic ft stacked or 90 cubic ft loose)

Enough wood to last the average household the season if you have approximately 2-3 fires per week.

1/4 cords (32 cubic ft stacked or 45 cubic ft loose)

Enough wood to last the average household the season if you have approximately 1-2 fires per week.

This is an approximate guide only based on customer feedback. Approximate burn time used to calculate this is 1 to 2 hours per fire in an open fire place.
It is virtually impossible to predict accurately because there are too many variables: How many pieces you burn at one fire, size of pieces, whether burned in a fireplace or wood stove, how efficient your burning appliance is, how many square ft of space to be heated, your prefered indoor temperature, outdoor temperature, wind conditions, etc.
